Helping out the community
Volunteering offers a treasure trove of opportunities, and the exercise involved can do your heart health a world of good. You could find yourself helping in a homeless shelter, working with ex-offenders, mentoring the young, gardening or restoring buildings. For information, see do-it.org.uk and csv.org.uk.
Get a grant
The council is also your go-to organisation if you’re inspired to set up your own project. Many councils have grants you can apply for and will have a team to offer support and advice on the set-up process. It can be anything from renovating a piece of wasteland or footpath clearing to an art project for young people.
Run a charity
If you’ve been helped by a support group or scheme run by a charity, you might like to return the favour and run one yourself. Contact the charity and ask their advice about finding a venue and basic training. You might also want to check out the charitycommission.gov.uk for comprehensive information on running a charity.
