NAA: Shape the Future with Social Connections
So it’s 2015; this is the year they went to in the film “Back to the Future.” Remember, with Michael J. Fox and his flying cars? Well, we haven’t quite delivered on that technology but like his car we have confirmed that time flies. And so here we are during these present times knowing 10 years will pass just the same – the question we should answer for ourselves is, what future do we want for ourselves and those around us? Well, I think that is the same as it has always been: Safety, Equality, Opportunity, etc.
So how can we work to ensure our future welcomes us and our children to times where we want to live? It starts in the local community. The apartment industry houses more than 37 million people and provides communities to families across the country. This is our greatest potential as an industry to shape the future of our society. But how do we get back to times when neighbors knew each other and spent time sharing the experience of life? It’s all about social connections!
Here are a few ideas to help grow them in your community.
Ask Around. Who lives in your community and would like to see social connections grow among residents? What is their passion and who can you introduce them to who shares the passion. Perhaps it is running, books, or community service. A simple introduction may be the catalyst for something new!
Theme your Resident Function. So you meet a resident who wants to get a running club going. Make your next community gathering welcome to all but focus on fitness and running. At some point during the party get everyone together, thank them for coming out and talk about interest among the residents to start a running group. Ask who in the community would be interested – plan a day and have everyone go for a run. Endorphins will be flowing and friendships will be made!
Meet Other Community Managers. The apartment industry is full of people who understand the value of strong local communities. Talk to people in your local association who want to get cool things going among their communities. Plan cross community events where your staff visits their functions and you invite them to yours. Share picturess and stories across both communities’ social media!
Spend Time with Like-Minded Managers. Find managers who want to create a sense of community among their residents. Plan brainstorming sessions a couple times a month-meet up for lunch or other activities to share what is working and what could work better.
Reach Out to the Greater Community. Your community is a part of the greater community. Find ways for your residents to make a collective contribution to your city or town. Let people outside your community know your plan and connect them to your community’s social media outlets. Canned food drives, adopt a Street and volunteer days are a good place to start.
Research shows communities which contain strong social bonds are safer and healthier for the individuals and families who live there. Community managers have a great potential to make a positive contribution to hundreds of people by simply hosting activities which create and grow social connections among residents. If you work in the apartment industry and are looking to explore your own potential to do good, start with your residents!
